ダライ・ラマの英語表記は?

ダライ・ラマの英語表記はDalai Lamaではありません。ダライ・ラマは人名ではなく、チベット仏教の最高指導者を指す役職名(モンゴル語で「智慧の海」という意味)なので固有名詞ではなく、共通[普通]名詞扱いになります。今のダライ・ラマは14代目ですが、一人しか現存していないのでtheがついて、the Dalai Lamaになります。14代目ということ示したいときはthe 14th Dalai Lamaと言いますが、前のダライ・ラマについても言及するときは複数になってthe Dalai Lamasということもできます。また信者が敬称をつけてHis Holiness the Dalai Lamaということもあります。
