やっぱりトトロの英語(6): Where are you headed?

3人乗りをしている草壁一家を見かけたカンタのばあちゃんが田んぼから声をかけます。

「おそろいでお出かけか~い?」

「お母さんのお見舞いに行くの~。」とサツキが返答。英語ではこう。

GRANNY – Hello there, Kusakabes! Where are you headed?
SATSUKI – We’re going to visit Mom in the hospital!

Hello there = こんにちは。thereは話をしている自分の所(here)から「向こう側(にいる人)」という呼びかけです。「こんにちは、そこにいる人たち」ってニュアンスでしょうか。

「見舞いに行く」はvisitではなく、go to seeと言ってもかまいません。

「どこへ行くのですか?」と尋ねたいときは、Where are you headed?と言いましょう。be headedで「~の方向に向かっている」という意味になります。ここで注意すべき事は、受動態のbe headedだけでなく、能動態のheadも「向かう」という意味があることです。

Ichiro heads for the third base.=一郎が三塁に向かいます。

ここでのheadは自動詞なのでどの地点に向かうかを示すときはhead forという形を取ります。
